Pittsburgh premiere of newly composed scores to Georges Méliès’ silent films: A Trip to the Moon (1902) and The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903).



Coming to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall in Carnegie, PA on Saturday January 25th is a unique audio-visual experience with the Kyle Simpson Chamber Orchestra. As a part of the Listen Locally season, the orchestra will present the Pittsburgh premiere of newly composed scores to Georges Méliès’ silent films: A Trip to the Moon (1902) and The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903).

Award-winning Pittsburgh composer and international artist, Kyle Simpson D.M.A. and his 17-piece chamber orchestra will perform live with Pittsburgh’s Red Line String Quartet to a screening of Méliès’ two most famous silent films.

Méliès’ early twentieth century costumes, sets, and signature optical tricks are crafted together with Simpson’s eclectic compositional style with influences of Debussy, Stravinsky, Steve Reich and a nod to the cinematic sounds of John Williams and Alexandre Desplat. Travel through time with us and rediscover these brilliant films with the uniquely 21st century concept of marrying contemporary music with classic film.

PREPARE TO GET MESSY ON NEW YEAR’S DAY AT THE SCIENCE CENTER VISITORS ARE INVITED TO START 2020 WITH MESSFEST TRADITION

MessFest, Carnegie Science Center’s one-of-a-kind tradition to kick off the New Year, is back! Free with general admission, the 14th annual messy celebration returns on Wed., Jan. 1 and features the slimiest, yuckiest, and gooiest activities for visitors of all ages. From 10 am to 5 pm, visitors get hands-on (literally) with the gooey substance Oobleck, share their creative side with finger painting, and enjoy a pudding “Pi” eating contest. The Egg Drop activity invites visitors to engineer a package for raw eggs that will protect their “egg-stronauts” as the eggs hurtle over a two-story drop. Roger Humphries and the RH Factor's Tribute to Art Blakey Special Guest: Brazilian Vocalist Kenia Friday, December 27, 8:00 p.m. Jazz drummer Roger Humphries is a household name in Pittsburgh. Deservedly so!  Music critics rate him one of the most exciting percussionists in the business today.  Roger credits Art Blakey with teaching him how to swing. Blakey, born in Pittsburgh in 1919, had a profound influence on mainstream jazz. Purportedly, Blakey started his music career on piano, but was persuaded –  at gunpoint –  to switch to drums.  A club owner who wanted to clear the piano for a young Erroll Garner.  However he found his way to drums, Blakey went on to jazz greatness with his band, the Jazz Messengers.
