CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER SUMMER CAMPS PROVIDE GREAT OPTIONS FOR GIFTS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON



NEW PROGRAMS, ONLINE REGISTRATION AVAILABLE FOR 2020

The summer may be months away, but most parents are already thinking about ways to ensure that their child’s summer is fun, active, and enriching. Experiences are the perfect gift to give any child this holiday season. Give the gift of video game science, robotics or space exploration, kitchen chemistry, or digital animation. Carnegie Science Center summer camp registration is now open, and reservations are being accepted for dozens of programs for children and teens ages 4–18. If you can’t register for your favorite camper yet, purchase a Gift Certificate, good for camps, classes, membership, and admission to the Science Center.

Little Einstein’s will love specifically programmed half-day adventures, and other kids and teens will enjoy full-day science experiences.

BNY Mellon Fab Lab Carnegie Science Center, one of Pittsburgh’s coolest digital makerspaces, offers cutting-edge experiences in digital fabrication, while the brand-new Colcom Foundation Wet Lab in the FedEx STEM Learning Labs allows kids to conduct authentic science experiments. Along with all-time favorites Kennywood Camp and Explore Pittsburgh, there are 25+ new themes to choose from that will keep kids active all summer long! Some camps will be held inside the PPG SCIENCE PAVILION™.

For children with sensory sensitive disorders who may not have had the opportunity in the past to participate in Summer Camps, check out Sensory Sensitive Science Camps – camps adapted specifically for children with sensory processing disorders and/or on the autism spectrum. Adaptations include a lower camp-to-staff ratio, reduction of loud sounds and bright lights, modified classroom furniture, and streamlined check-in and check-out procedures.

PREPARE TO GET MESSY ON NEW YEAR’S DAY AT THE SCIENCE CENTER VISITORS ARE INVITED TO START 2020 WITH MESSFEST TRADITION

MessFest, Carnegie Science Center’s one-of-a-kind tradition to kick off the New Year, is back! Free with general admission, the 14th annual messy celebration returns on Wed., Jan. 1 and features the slimiest, yuckiest, and gooiest activities for visitors of all ages. From 10 am to 5 pm, visitors get hands-on (literally) with the gooey substance Oobleck, share their creative side with finger painting, and enjoy a pudding “Pi” eating contest. The Egg Drop activity invites visitors to engineer a package for raw eggs that will protect their “egg-stronauts” as the eggs hurtle over a two-story drop. It’s fun for the whole family and, best of all, parents don’t have to clean up after their kids! Visitors are advised: You WILL get messy, so don’t dress up! Get a Head Start on New Year's Eve with Roger Humprhies and the RH Factor

Roger Humphries and the RH Factor's Tribute to Art Blakey Special Guest: Brazilian Vocalist Kenia Friday, December 27, 8:00 p.m. Jazz drummer Roger Humphries is a household name in Pittsburgh. Deservedly so!  Music critics rate him one of the most exciting percussionists in the business today.  Roger credits Art Blakey with teaching him how to swing. Blakey, born in Pittsburgh in 1919, had a profound influence on mainstream jazz. Purportedly, Blakey started his music career on piano, but was persuaded –  at gunpoint –  to switch to drums.  A club owner who wanted to clear the piano for a young Erroll Garner.  However he found his way to drums, Blakey went on to jazz greatness with his band, the Jazz Messengers. The performance will be followed by a dessert reception in the Lincoln Gallery. Enjoy a complimentary prosecco toast (21+).  Wine and beer by donation, thereafter.
