About Etty

Etty is a touring one-woman play based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum, adapted and performed by Susan Stein. Directed by Austin Pendleton.

Using Esther "Etty" Hillesum's words, Susan Stein's adaptation brings us to 1941 when Etty, a young Dutch Jewish woman, was living in Amsterdam. Upon the recommendation of her therapist, she began a diary to help her with her depression. The diaries take on their own life, presenting Etty's growth as a writer and spiritual transformation. It explores the choiceless choices that one woman made in one of the darkest periods of history. The play contains mature themes.

Etty's voice reaches out from the Holocaust and allow us to see the power of hope and individual thought in the most extreme circumstances. The play will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
